New Information Released on Pokemon for Switch Game
An image, posted on the imageboard 4chan recently, shows what looks like might be a new Pokémon switch game. The creature looks like an adorable blue platypus, with a big beaver tail and a black bill, and the picture shows it in multiple positions.
While the identification of the image has yet to occur—for all we know, it might be the creation of a skilled fan making up their own Pokémon—many gaming websites are reacting positively to the news, stating that it might be a new starter ‘mon (that is, one of the three available Pokémon given to you by the professor before starting your journey proper). The creature certainly looks like it might be; its blue coloring and platypus-like nature would indicate a water type—a staple of Pokémon starters—while its small, cute appearance would indicate that it’s a rookie Pokémon, with two evolutions left after its current form.
The picture is also similar to the concept art released for Sun and Moon, the most recent generation of main Pokémon games. Whether that’s credible or suspicious is left up in the air. Also in question is the use of Japanese lettering in the sketches, which seems inconsistent, according to the more skeptical commentators. Hiragana (the standard Japanese syllabary) and katakana (the one used for transcribing words from other languages) are both used in the sketch, apparently with no solid reason.
So far, rumors have been circulating, stating that the game will be released in 2018. While the date has yet to be confirmed, the case that a new Pokémon game is in the works is now stronger than before, though Nintendo and Game Freak still haven’t said anything on the matter.
If the quality of its predecessors is anything to go by, this game could be one of the best Switch games on the market when it’s finally released.
Fans are eagerly awaiting for details of the potential new game. In particular, Pokémon Day will be held on Tuesday, February 27th; if the publishers are going to sound off anytime soon, that would be an excellent time. Even if the entire thing isn’t substantiated, Nintendo and Game Freak may still have some announcements for the series.
It also seems likely that the reveal would take place through a livestream on the Nintendo Direct service. Several such livestreams have already been held over the course of the new year. In any event, there will almost certainly be a new livestream before the E3 conference, which is to be held in June of this year, as is typical. Many details of the best Switch games, such as Super Mario Odyssey, are revealed through Nintendo Direct livestreams.
What we do know is that a Pokémon game will be released on the Switch at some point in the near future, if not necessarily this year. (We hope that it will become one of the best Switch games, although nothing is guaranteed.) While some are speculating that this will be an entirely new game. Other commentators believe that it might simply be a port of Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, the newest games in the series.
What we also know is that Tsunekazu Ishihara, who is the CEO of the Pokémon Company, was initially reluctant about the Switch, only to change his mind later on. In his words: “I came to realize the key to a successful game is quite simple – software with absolute quality leads sales of hardware. Playing style can be flexible if the software is attractive enough. … With the Switch, we see it as a chance to create Pokémon that goes deeper and with a higher level of expression. As a result, that makes it an extremely important platform. … Right now we’re using 7 to 8-inch screens, but on a high-definition TV you can express a whole different world with graphics and sound.”
This is good news for the Pokémon series, and fans of Switch games in general. Not to mention, Pokémon’s developers have also recently stated that they’re considering expanding multiplayer play. “Until now, games were made as one for one person, but now you can go home and play with everyone – so how do we tackle these themes, and how do we make sure it’s not complicated?” said Ishihara.
It’s not clear how much the future will change if Pokémon games are released as Switch games. Historically, every edition in the main series was released with two games, with the potential of a third game added later; however, the possibility of a Switch game might change the whole formula.
The next main games of the Pokémon series would constitute Generation VIII, following the Pokémon Sun and Moon games, which were released in November of 2016. The most recent update of the series after that was Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, which offered new content and areas to explore.
